Everything you need to know before your baby’s first photo session.
🍼 1. Booking & Timing
How old are the newborns you typically photograph?
We recommend scheduling your newborn session within the first 14 days of life. During this time, babies are sleepier, more flexible, and easier to pose in those sweet curled-up positions.
What if my baby is older than two weeks?
We can still photograph your baby! Older newborns may be more alert and prefer to stretch out, so the poses will be a little different. Expect a few more wrapped or clothed setups and potentially a longer session, but we’ll still create beautiful images you’ll love.
Fun Fact: At birth, babies have around 300 bones and cartilage pieces. After about two weeks, these begin to fuse into calcified bone, making it harder for babies to curl up like they did in the womb.
What if I deliver earlier or later than my due date?
No problem! Once your session is reserved with a non-refundable retainer, we’ll adjust the schedule based on your baby’s actual arrival. We’ve never missed a newborn session due to timing changes.
What if we arrive late to our session?
We’ll start as soon as you arrive, but please know that late arrivals may result in fewer final images, especially if the next appointment is scheduled shortly after.
🎀 2. Preparing for the Session
What should my baby wear before and during the session?
Keep it simple! Dress your baby in an easy-to-remove onesie and leave the diaper slightly loose to prevent red marks. Please avoid socks or tight headbands beforehand. We provide a variety of wraps, newborn outfits, and props, but you’re welcome to bring soft blankets for extra comfort.
Can I bring sentimental props?
Yes, we love adding personal touches to your session! Items like a special blanket, stuffed animal, or sports memorabilia are always welcome. We’ll do our best to work them into the shoot.
Can I choose colors or themes?
Absolutely! We invite your input on color palettes or styles, but the photographer will ultimately design the set to maintain a cohesive and timeless look that reflects our studio aesthetic.
I found a photo I love online. Can you recreate it?
We’re happy to try! Please send it in advance. If we don’t have the exact props, you’re welcome to provide them. Some setups may not be possible depending on your baby’s temperament or positioning, but we’ll let you know.
Can I take a photo with my baby?
Yes! Parent portraits are a wonderful way to celebrate this special time. Just let us know in advance — this is offered as an optional add-on.
How many people can attend the session?
We recommend keeping it simple with just baby and parents. Too many people can disrupt your baby’s sleep. If siblings are joining, please bring them at the beginning of the session so they can head home or to the park afterward.
Do you offer in-home newborn sessions?
All newborn sessions are held at our cozy, fully equipped home studio in Lakeland Hills, Auburn.
What’s the temperature like in the studio?
We keep the studio warm — around 75°F — to help your baby stay sleepy and relaxed. If you’re feeling a little warm, don’t worry, it’s just right for baby! We also have a portable heater if needed.
📷 3. During the Session
How long does a newborn session take?
Baby only: 2–3 hours
Baby with parents and/or siblings: Up to 4 hours
Newborn sessions take time and patience to create a calm, soothing environment and capture every tiny detail.
Why do newborn sessions take so long?
Newborn photography is gentle and intentional. Here's why it takes time:
Positioning: It can take 20+ minutes to gently pose your baby and ensure those little fingers and toes are just right.
Feedings: Most babies feed at least twice during the session, sometimes more. Rushed feedings = fussy babies.
Accidents: It’s very normal for babies to go potty during the session (especially when nude!). We’re prepared for it.
Transitions: Every wrap, outfit, or set change can wake baby. We take our time to keep them relaxed and asleep.
Feel free to bring a book or enjoy the downtime—we’ve created a peaceful space for you to relax.
What if my baby gets hungry?
If you live within 15 minutes, feel free to feed at home. If you're farther away, we recommend feeding upon arrival. We’ll likely take another feeding break during the session too.
What if my baby cries or gets fussy?
That’s totally normal! We use warmth, white noise, rocking, and patience to soothe your baby. If needed, we’ll take a break for a feeding or snuggles.
What if my baby has an accident during the session?
It happens in nearly every session — no need to worry or apologize! We’re used to it and fully prepared with extra blankets and wipes.
Can we watch the session?
Of course! You're welcome to relax in the studio and observe from a distance. We have a comfy couch for you to sit back and enjoy.
Can I take behind-the-scenes photos or videos?
Yes, but please wait to post anything until you receive your final gallery. Keep in mind that we’ll be moving around a lot, so space is limited.
💻 4. After the Session
When will we receive our photos?
Proofs: Sent ~1 week after your session. You’ll choose your favorite images from these.
Final edits: Delivered about 3 weeks after you make your selections.
What are photo proofs?
Proofs are lightly edited, low-resolution images that help you select your final photos. They’re often watermarked and not available for download.
Will I receive unedited or RAW files?
No. We only deliver fully retouched images that meet our quality standards.
What rights do I have to the digital images?
You’ll receive personal-use rights to print and share your images. You may not alter, sell, or use the images commercially (e.g., for publication or profit).
Can I post my photos on social media?
Yes! We love seeing our work shared online. Please tag us @ZolarStudio or link to our website when you post — it means the world to us.
