Helpful tips and answers to make your family session smooth, fun, and unforgettable.
📅 1. Planning & Scheduling
How long do family sessions take?
Sessions typically last 1 to 1.5 hours and are held at one location. We aim to create a relaxed, enjoyable experience with plenty of time to capture natural, beautiful moments.
Can we do multiple locations?
Most family sessions are designed for one location to keep things simple and efficient. If you're interested in multiple locations, let us know—additional travel and time fees may apply.
When is the best time of day for family photos?
We love shooting during golden hour—the soft, glowing light that happens shortly after sunrise or just before sunset. It creates the most flattering and magical lighting for your photos.☀️ Most popular: About 2 hours before sunset🌤 Early riser? Sunrise sessions are also gorgeous and peaceful💡 Weekdays offer more privacy and fewer crowds at popular spots
If golden hour doesn’t fit your schedule, we can still create beautiful images at any time of day!
What if the weather is bad on the day of our session?
Weather can be unpredictable. If it rains or conditions become uncomfortable (too hot or too cold), we’re happy to reschedule. That said, a little rain can add storytelling charm—with umbrellas, boots, or moody skies—so we’re open to embracing it if you are!
👗 2. Outfits & Styling
What should we wear?
Outfits make a big difference! Keep it simple and coordinated, but not too matchy-matchy. Here are a few tips:
Choose fitted, well-sized clothing—especially for men
Avoid solid black or white (they can look flat or harsh)
Stick with solid colors or soft patterns
If one person wears a pattern, the rest should wear solids
Dress seasonally—colors can complement the time of year
Need help choosing outfits? We’re happy to offer guidance during your planning.
Can we bring outfit changes?
In-studio sessions: Yes, we allow 2–3 outfit changes
On-location sessions: One outfit change is allowed, but keep in mind it can be tricky to find private spots to change
📍 3. Locations & Themes
Can we choose the location?
Yes! We’re happy to suggest scenic spots or meet you at a location you love. Here are some of our local favorites (within 25 miles of our studio):
Redondo Beach, Des Moines (near Salty’s Restaurant)
Point Defiance Rose Garden, Tacoma
Owen Beach, Tacoma
Lake Fenwick Park, Kent
Clark Lake Park, Kent
Locations beyond 25 miles may incur a travel fee. Some parks may also require a permit—we’ll help you navigate that if needed.
Do you offer themed or stylized sessions?
Yes! We love creative family sessions. If you have a fun concept—like a picnic, camping, baking, board games, or even a cozy in-home lifestyle session—let’s make it happen! We’re always excited to bring your vision to life.
🖼 4. After the Session
Do we need to order prints, albums, or canvases?
Not at all—but we highly recommend it! Physical keepsakes like albums and wall art turn your photos into tangible heirlooms you can enjoy every day. They also make great gifts and conversation starters in your home. While digital is convenient, printed memories last for generations.
🛑 5. Safety First
What if a photo idea seems risky or unsafe?
Your safety is our #1 priority. We’ll never ask you (or your children) to do anything that feels unsafe or uncomfortable. If a client suggests something we feel could be dangerous, we’ll politely decline. If someone insists despite our concerns, the session may be ended without a refund. We’re here to create magic—but never at the risk of injury.
