Everything you need to know to get the most out of your little one’s big milestone session!
🎂 1. Booking & Planning
When should I schedule a cake smash session?
We recommend booking your cake smash session at least 4 weeks before your child’s 1st or 2nd birthday. This gives us time to discuss themes, colors, and plan the session in advance.
Where will the session take place?
All cake smash sessions are held at our home studio in Lakeland Hills, Auburn.
Do you provide the cake?
No, we do not provide the cake. You’re welcome to make your own or order from a reputable local baker.
What kind of cake should I get?
We recommend a 6–8" vanilla cake with fluffy, pastel or white buttercream icing. Avoid chocolate (which can look like dirt!) and red velvet (which can stain skin). Skip fondant—it's harder for babies to smash and enjoy.
🧸 2. What to Bring & How to Prepare
What should my child wear?
Choose two outfits:
A cute or formal outfit for pre-cake portraits
A fun cake smash outfit (like a tutu, romper, bowtie, or jeans)
Bring extra accessories like hats or necklaces if you'd like, and pack 1–2 options in case we want to change things up.
Do you provide props or decorations?
We provide a backdrop and matching flag banners to coordinate with your theme. You’re welcome to bring additional props—just let us know ahead of time so we can prepare.
Can I bring sentimental or meaningful props?
Absolutely! Personal items like toys, blankets, or themed décor make your session uniquely yours.
What should we bring to the session?
Here’s a quick checklist:
✅ Cake
✅ Cake smash outfit
✅ 1–2 other baby outfits
✅ Change of clothes for parents (just in case!)
✅ Diapers & wipes
✅ Sippy cup or water
✅ Snacks (puffs, Cheerios) in case baby doesn’t like the cake
Pro tip: If your child hasn’t tried cake before, give them a cupcake at home before the session to help them warm up to the idea.
📸 3. During the Session
How long will the session last?
The full session lasts about 1 hour.
How does the session flow?
We start by finalizing the cake smash set. Then:
Photograph the setup without baby
Take portraits of your child in their pre-cake outfit
Change into the cake smash outfit
Bring in the cake and let the fun begin!
If you've dropped off props ahead of time, we'll have the set prepared in advance. If you bring them on the session day, we’ll take 15–30 minutes to set up before photographing.
What if my child doesn’t want to eat the cake?
That’s totally normal! Some babies dig right in, while others need encouragement. We can hide puffs or snacks inside the cake to help them interact with it. (Don’t worry, we won’t tell!)
Will I (mom or dad) get messy?
Most likely, yes! You might need to show your little one how it’s done or help them stay in place. Expect frosting on your hands—and possibly your clothes—so dress accordingly.
Can family members join the session?
We kindly ask that no more than two adults attend the session. Too many voices or distractions can overwhelm your child and affect the experience.
🧽 4. After the Smash
Do you include parent or sibling photos?
Our cake smash sessions are focused exclusively on your child. Parent and sibling photos are not included at this time.
How do we clean up?
We handle the cleanup! We recommend changing your child right at the cake smash setup. Have a towel, wipes, and a clean outfit ready to go.
